Letters to the Editors Tips and Tools

Letters to the editor are an important way to get the word out about candidates for office, big state issues, and upcoming votes on legislation both in Alabama and in Washington.

During the campaign season they can provide important momentum to candidates by showing grassroots support from potential constituents. Letters to the editor are also effective in sharing information about all kinds of issues that are important to Democrats.

They're a quick but powerful way to make a difference.  You can find a list of local papers below and some guidelines, so try your hand at writing to your local publication on a topic that's important to you today!

Letter to the Editor Guidelines:

  1. Try to keep it brief. Most papers prefer editorial submissions to be between 150 and 250 words.
  2. If possible, respond to a specific letter, editorial, or article that recently appeared in the paper.
  3. Make sure to tie the topic of your letter to local issues or how it will effect your community.
  4. If you cite statistics, a poll, or quote someone, be sure to make note of where you got the information from so others can look it up for themselves.
  5. Avoid being disrespectful towards positions you disagree with.
