Aladems Offers Condolences to Rep. Beck's Family & Friends

The Alabama Democratic Party offers condolences to the family and friends of the late Representative Warren Beck (R-Geneva), who died February 24. Rep. Beck received a B.S. in Marketing and a M.S. in education from Troy University.

Rep. Beck was in his second term in the State Legislature and served on the Tourism and Travel and Commerce committees. As Speaker of the House, Seth Hammett said of Rep. Beck in a statement Wednesday,

"Warren will long be remembered for his honesty and love of public service. When Warren told you he would do something, you could count on him to get it done. He understood the problems faced by his constituents in Geneva and Houston counties and he worked hard to represent them to the best of his ability."

GOP Can't Ignore Job Recovery

The GOP can complain and block every effort by the Democrats in Congress, and their obstructionist strategy seems to be working to their electoral advantage, but one thing is for sure, the job hemorrhaging that began under Bush is nearly gone.

Democrats Remember Rep. Lea Fite

Democratic Representative Lea Fite was layed to rest today. Fite was the State Representative for District 40 in Calhoun County.

As a supermarket owner and operator, Fite was a true man of the people. He served Calhoun County as a county commissioner before winning election to the House in 2002.

Among helping those who needed it most in his district, one of Fite's recent legislative victories required insurance companies to cover breast cancer screening.  Fite was also a major proponent to removing the sales taxes on food.

Fite is survived by his wife, Judy, and four children: Laurie, Wes, Trae, and Jerrod. Our heartfelt prayers and condolences go out to his family and friends.

A Message From Gov. Joe Manchin

jj.jpg

Good morning Alabama Democrats!

I am excited about my upcoming visit to Alabama, and I hope you will be able to join me. On Thursday, October 22nd, the Alabama Democratic Party is hosting its annual Jefferson-Jackson Dinner in Birmingham and I am honored to be the guest speaker. I want to personally invite you to come and enjoy a night of fellowship.

Alabama, like my home state of West Virginia, has a critical election coming up next year and it will take Democrats working together for our side to prevail. Our opponents have made their intentions known and they will stop at nothing to run our party out of office. We must be prepared to fight and win in 2010.

Our candidates will have many needs soon, and your Democratic Party is a great source of help and leadership to them. Their success translates to success for our candidates up and down the ballot. I am asking you to do your part now to help us build momentum for what lies ahead. By attending this event, you will not only be supporting your party, but you will have an enjoyable evening among friends.

Please click here to register for what promises to be a special occasion. I look forward to seeing you soon.

Governor Joe Manchin

P.S. If you are unable to attend the dinner but would still like to help us prepare for next year, please consider making a small donation of $25, $10, or $5 to the Alabama Democratic Party by clicking here.

Joe Manchin, West Virginia's 34th governor, was born and raised in the small coal mining town of Farmington, W.Va., where he learned at a young age the value of commitment.

He inherited a head for business from his grandfather, who was an Italian immigrant and the town grocer. His grandmother was a virtual one-woman social services agency, who helped him discover his heart for people.

So what's all the fuss about?

Prepared Remarks of President Barack Obama
Back to School Event

Arlington, Virginia | September 8, 2009

The President: Hello everyone - how's everybody doing today? I'm here with students at Wakefield High School in Arlington, Virginia. And we've got students tuning in from all across America, kindergarten through twelfth grade. I'm glad you all could join us today.

I know that for many of you, today is the first day of school. And for those of you in kindergarten, or starting middle or high school, it's your first day in a new school, so it's understandable if you're a little nervous. I imagine there are some seniors out there who are feeling pretty good right now, with just one more year to go. And no matter what grade you're in, some of you are probably wishing it were still summer, and you could've stayed in bed just a little longer this morning.

We'd like to welcome Senator Dunn to the Alabama Senate. Her district's people will now have full representation in the Alabama Legislature.

Alabama Democrats Mourn Passing of Bill Utsey

The Alabama Democratic Party extends its condolences to the friends and family of William LaFayette Utsey who passed away in a Birmingham hospital on Saturday, July 18, 2009. He was surrounded by his family when he died from complications after having knee surgery.

Utsey was a dedicated and lifelong Democrat who had been the Chair of the Choctaw County Democratic Executive Committee for 20 years until he recently retired from the post in 2006. He also served a stint as president of the Alabama Trial Lawyers Association.

Utsey is survived by his wife, Treobye, his sons Jeff and William Jacob, his daughter Elizabeth Utsey Saddler, and nine grandchildren.

Ruby Utsey said of her husband, "He was a very private man, a very modest man who had done great things. The thing that he could get the angriest about would be the case worth the least amount of money in his office, when he could not do for a poor person what he could do for himself."

Bill Utsey was a dyed in the wool Democrat who shared the values we all hold dear. His presence in our Party will surely be missed.

Visitation will be Monday from 5 to 8 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church in Butler and will continue Tuesday from 1 p.m. until the 3 p.m. funeral. Burial will follow in Gilbertown Cemetery. Arrangements are by Phillips Funeral Home in Gilbertown.

Mobile lawyer Jack Miller dies

[Mobile Register, McElroy, 7/13/09]

Former state Democratic chairman called author of 'String of Pearls' redevelopment program

Attorney Jack Miller, described by former Mayor Mike Dow as the "author" of downtown Mobile's "String of Pearls" redevelopment program and whose tough but centrist political instincts helped put Democrats in the governor's mansion in Montgomery, has died.

Friends said Miller, 65, succumbed Saturday to a lengthy illness while surrounded by family at his Dog River home. He had returned to Mobile in recent weeks from another home in the Virgin Islands, law partner Palmer Hamilton said.

A Duke University graduate who earned his law degree from the University of Alabama, Miller was described Sunday by another partner, Ron Snider, as "a visionary in everything he touched."

Cheif Justice Cobb Continues Fight to Improve Alabama's Courts

"For the past 28 years, Chief Justice Sue Bell Cobb has dedicated herself to serving the people of Alabama. She was the first female trial court judge in the history of her home county of Conecuh where she was re-elected twice, was elected to the Court of Criminal Appeals and now serves as Chief Justice on our highest court. In addition to her work on the bench, she has been a driving force behind much needed reforms and has remained dedicated to ensuring a bright future for all of Alabama's children.

As she continues to serve as Chief Justice, she will carry on this important work and remain a strong and important voice for all Alabamians."

Joe Turnham

Statement from Chief Justice Sue Bell Cobb:
"I am honored to have been sought out and encouraged to run for Governor by so many Alabamians from all walks of life. Their support has been humbling and perhaps made this decision the most difficult I have ever been called upon to make.

First and foremost, I want the best for the people of Alabama, whom I have attempted to faithfully serve for the last 28 years. I care greatly about where we are as a state and the direction in which we need to go.

Obama's 2009 Address to Joint Session of Congress

Remarks of President Barack Obama - As Prepared for Delivery
Address to Joint Session of Congress
Tuesday, February 24th, 2009

Madame Speaker, Mr. Vice President, Members of Congress, and the First Lady of the United States:

I've come here tonight not only to address the distinguished men and women in this great chamber, but to speak frankly and directly to the men and women who sent us here.

I know that for many Americans watching right now, the state of our economy is a concern that rises above all others. And rightly so. If you haven't been personally affected by this recession, you probably know someone who has - a friend; a neighbor; a member of your family. You don't need to hear another list of statistics to know that our economy is in crisis, because you live it every day. It's the worry you wake up with and the source of sleepless nights. It's the job you thought you'd retire from but now have lost; the business you built your dreams upon that's now hanging by a thread; the college acceptance letter your child had to put back in the envelope. The impact of this recession is real, and it is everywhere.

Democratic Response to State of the State

The Democratic response by Senate Majority Leader Zeb Little of Cullman to Republican Gov. Bob Riley's State of the State speech:

Good evening.

I'm Senator Zeb Little, majority leader of the state senate and member of the Senate Democratic Caucus.

We agree with Governor Riley that we should have strong ethics reform, but we also think our priority needs to be helping the people of Alabama. We think the state of the state address ought to be about you. The address should really be about YOUR state, the state of YOUR lives, the state of YOUR families.

Accepted a Quarter of a Million Dollars from ExxonMobil Lobbyist Groups and Attorneys

Montgomery, AL - Alabama Democratic Party Chairman Joe Turnham this morning seized on Supreme Court Candidate Judge Greg Shaw's campaign's assertion that his campaign is not funded by big oil.
"Judge Greg Shaw has taken a grand total of a quarter of a million dollars from big oil. This money has come directly from ExxonMobil's registered lobbyists and its top Alabama law firm," said Turnham. "Greg Shaw was right when he told the Huntsville Times a couple months ago that he was "sure there may be some individuals that have connections to Exxon Mobil" giving him campaign contributions"

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Contact: Lindsay Waits September 29, 2008 (334) 262-2221

Nearly Trillion Dollar Bailout Illustrates Failure of Bush-McCain Economics

Montgomery, AL - The unprecedented economic crisis America faces today is the final verdict on the absolute failures of Bush-McCain economics. Bank after bank has failed, markets are in turmoil and homeowners still face uncertainty. The crisis has once again laid out the differences between the two candidates in this election. While John McCain has played politics with the bailout and failed to deliver enough Republican votes to pass a plan in the House today, and while the Bush administration asked the American people for a blank check, Barack Obama fought to ensure the inclusion of the taxpayer protections he has been insisting upon consistently since the beginning of this crisis.

Montgomery, AL - In a press conference from its party headquarters in Montgomery today, Alabama Democratic Party Chairman Joe Turnham announced that the Party was filing suit against Alabama's Secretary of State, Beth Chapman for her office's refusal to provide the state Party with its free updates of voter lists as prescribed by Alabama law.

The state Party contends it is entitled to a free copy of the file for each statewide election that occurs in a year. Turnham says that Chapman's office has denied several requests for voter file updates, contending the state Party is only entitled to one free file per year. Chapman has offered the Party the list for $28,170.13 for each time it wants an update.

Hoover- The Professional Firefighters of Alabama (PFFAL) have announced their endorsement of Judge Deborah Bell Paseur, a candidate for the Alabama Supreme Court. The group's membership includes approximately 2,000 professional firefighters throughout the state of Alabama.

"We are proud to join members of law enforcement in pledging our support to Judge Deborah Bell Paseur. Judge Paseur has a 27-year record as a judge who is tough but fair, is the only candidate who has actually put criminals away and has worked extensively outside the courtroom to ensure children and young adults stay out of trouble and the legal system," said Dale Wyatt, President of PFFAL. "These are the reasons why Judge Paseur is the choice of firefighters and law enforcement across the state."

While Markets Reel From Disastrous Bush Economic Policies, McCain Wants to Gamble with Americans' Future on Wall Street.

Montgomery, AL - This week's upheaval on Wall Street is yet another dramatic reminder of the risk the Bush-McCain plan to privatize Social Security poses to America's seniors and the economic security of our families. While the plan was defeated in 2005, Senator McCain wants to privatize Social Security, and put Americans' economic security in corporate hands subject to the kind of volatility in the market we've seen this week, jeopardizing the well-being of those most affected by failed Bush-McCain economic policies, seniors.

Courthouses and Counties - Democrats' Foundation

September 17, 2008

Courthouses and counties called Democrats' foundation
By Jim Cox Editor & Publisher
"The foundation of the [Democratic] party is in the courthouses and the counties," Alabama Democratic Party Chairman Joe Turnham told Clarke County Democrats last Thursday in Grove Hill.

Turnham said despite inroads by the Republican Party, Democrats still hold 70 percent or better of elected offices in Alabama. Democrats have reclaimed some offices that had been held by appointed or elected Republicans in recent years, he added.

"The presidential race is going to be close but there is a lot of enthusiasm out there for Sen. [Barack] Obama," he observed. Young people and new voters are especially supportive and he said that is good.  Turnham is attending the Democratic National Convention in Denver, Colorado this week. Lynda Malone of Grove Hill, vice chairman of the Clarke County party, is a delegate. This is her fourth presidential convention.

Remarks by Sen. Obama at Convention

To Chairman Dean and my great friend Dick Durbin; and to all my fellow citizens of this great nation;

With profound gratitude and great humility, I accept your nomination for the presidency of the United States.

Let me express my thanks to the historic slate of candidates who accompanied me on this journey, and especially the one who traveled the farthest - a champion for working Americans and an inspiration to my daughters and to yours -- Hillary Rodham Clinton. To President Clinton, who last night made the case for change as only he can make it; to Ted Kennedy, who embodies the spirit of service; and to the next Vice President of the United States, Joe Biden, I thank you. I am grateful to finish this journey with one of the finest statesmen of our time, a man at ease with everyone from world leaders to the conductors on the Amtrak train he still takes home every night.

Dothan Mayor Pat Thomas, a Republican, endorsed Montgomery Mayor Bobby Bright's candidacy for the 2nd Congressional District seat today. Thomas serves as the Alabama for McCain campaign's Mayoral Chair for the state and has also been a member of the Republican Executive Committee of Houston County. Below is the text of the Mayor's remarks:

Bobby Bright's campaign motto is "A Proven Leader". As Mayor of Montgomery for the last nine years, there has been great positive change. That change was produced by his vision, his hard work, and his willingness to partner with others. He is indeed a proven leader. Those attributes will serve the Wiregrass well when Mayor Bright goes to Washington D.C.

Democrats Pass Farm Bill

May 22, 2008

In what can only be considered a major blow to a lame duck president and a victory for Alabama farmers, the Democratic led Congress overrode Bush's veto of the farm bill.

The bill includes subsidies for certain crops, more food stamps to help the poor with rising grocery prices, conservations programs, a disaster relief measure, and for the first time subsidizes growers of fresh fruits and vegetables.

The vote in the House was 316-108 , and 82-13 in the Senate, giving Democrats only two total veto overrides during Bush's presidency.

According to a statement issued by Commissioner of Agriculture Ron Sparks, he "believes that the President's position does not take into account the circumstances of farmers in Alabama and throughout the Southeast."

Grocery Tax Cut in Trouble

With one day remaining in the legislative session, the bill to remove the state sales taxes on groceries is in trouble. A vote on Thursday fell one shy of bringing the bill up for debate, leaving only one day left for consideration.

Most of the Senate's Republican minority have vehemently opposed the measure and have blocked debate. They've also tried to tack on amendments in an attempt to kill the measure.

The chance to pass this bill is not yet over! Please contact your Senator and encourage them to vote yes. Click here for your Senators contact information.

Alabama Democrats Say Hold Exxon-Mobil Accountable

Alabama Democratic Party Chair Joe Turnham today called on democrats and republicans alike to support HB 326 sponsored by Democrat John Knight that would tax oil and gas based upon gross value at the point of production. Companies like Exxon-Mobil need to pay their fair share of taxes just like Alabama consumers. With record profits being reported by big oil and with Alabama citizens, truckers and small business owners being hammered by record prices at the pump, this bill makes sense by requiring corporate responsibility." Turnham explained.

Turnham said revenue from big oil and gas interests should be used to fund children's health care, veterans care, roads and bridges and corrections. Turnham said the recent 8-1 decision by the republican Supreme Court to overturn two different jury awards of $4.5 billion against Exxon-Mobil and Exxon-Mobil's legal attempts to receive tax refunds from Alabama citizens shows that special interests are in charge of our courts. We can help change this in 2008 with the election of a new democratic justice on the Alabama Supreme Court.

We salute Rep Knight for attempting to rectify this awful situation and restoring accountability of big oil to Alabama taxpayers.

Rembering Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Thumbnail image for MLK2.jpg

"I refuse to accept the view that mankind is so tragically bound to the starless midnight of racism and war that the bright daybreak of peace and brotherhood can never become a reality... I believe that unarmed truth and unconditional love will have the final word." - MLK, Jr.

The Alabama Democratic Party honors Dr. King's legacy and believes it is incumbent on us all to continue his struggle for freedom, justice, and equality for all people. Our office will be closed Monday to observe the holiday, but all ADP staffers will be scattering around the state to attend services in memory of this American hero.

Russellville Democrat Will Be Missed

Margaret Ann Flippen Wright passed away yesterday and the Alabama Democratic Party wants to send our condolences to her family, including Art Richey who currently serves as President of the Alabama College Democrats.

Mrs. Margaret Ann was always a staunch "Yellow Dog" Democrat all of her life in spite of some of her family usually voting the other way. She was always an advocate for the underdog and the needy. She personally helped a lot of needy folks over many years. She was a teacher for many years in the Huntsville area. She was a perfect example of what a real life Democratic Mother looked like in the children's book Why My Mommy is a Democrat?

She will be greatly missed, and we salute her years of service to her community and the ideals she lived by.
