This week Congressional candidate Jay Love continued to show just how much he loves raising taxes by calling a 23% sales tax hike on everything Alabama families buy "intriguing" in a forum Monday.
When Love was asked about what he thought of a plan to raise taxes on gas, groceries, and medicine by 23%, Love answered: "You know, I'm intrigued with it. Anything that simplifies the tax code, I'm gonna be for it." [Community Bankers Association of Alabama forum, 9/22]
This response shouldn't be surprising from Jay Love, given his tax-loving record. Love voted for the largest tax hike in Alabama history, raising taxes on Alabama families by more than $1.2 billion dollars. And in April of this year, Love voted against eliminating the state sales tax on food, while food prices were climbing.
"Given Jay Love's tax-loving record, it's no wonder that he wants to tax working Alabama families 23% more at places like the grocery store and the gas station," said Jim Spearman, Executive Director of the Alabama Democratic Party. "At a time when our economy is in crisis and Alabama families are struggling just make ends meet, we just can't afford Jay Love's love of taxes."
Information on Love's "Intriguing" Tax:
Love said he was "intrigued" by the so-called "Fair Tax". This tax would actually be a 23% national retail sales tax on almost everything Alabamans buy, including groceries, gas, and medicine. [HR25, 110th Congress; Factcheck.org, 5/31/07]
