District Judge David Breland, who retires March 31 after 25 years, will receive the Newton Powell Service Award.

Contributions rewarded

"We always honor an individual who has made major contributions to the state and a local citizen who has made outstanding contributions to the people of Morgan County," Cheatham said.

"This year we're pleased to recognize Chief Justice Cobb and David."

Cheatham said Cobb has been a children's advocate as a private citizen and as a member of the court system as local judge, appellate judge and now Supreme Court Justice.

Children's advocacy

Breland has worked closely with Cobb on children's advocacy on the state and local level, through the programs he has sponsored.

"He also is so deserving," Cheatham said.

"It is really fitting that we're honoring these two individuals for their work."
