Aladems Mourns Death of Johnnie Carr
"Johnnie Carr, a civil rights leader who helped organize a 381-day boycott of Montgomery buses by blacks, has passed away at age 97."
"Her family said she was hospitalized earlier in the month after suffering a stroke."
"Carr was president of the Montgomery Improvement Association and helped lead the boycott of city buses when seamstress Rosa Parks, a childhood friend of Carr's, refused to give up her seat on a Montgomery bus to a white man."
"Parks' arrest on Dec. 1, 1955, eventually led to a Supreme Court decision ending segregation in public transportation."
