ENEWS Update 2007-12-04

2008 Delegate Candidate Qualifying:

If you are considering a run for delegate to the 2008 convention in Denver, you need to hurry up!! The deadline to have your forms in at the Alabama Democratic Party headquarters is FRIDAY, DECEMBER 7 at 5:00 PM. That is the time your forms must be in our hands; simply having a postmark prior to that is not sufficient. This is the last reminder you’ll receive to come to our office or go online at www.aladems.org to find the necessary forms and get them back to us BEFORE 5:00 PM on FRIDAY of this week. If you have questions, please give us a call at (800) 995-3386. Thank you.

Jefferson-Jackson Recap:

If you were not at the Jefferson-Jackson Dinner last Friday, you missed a great time of fellowship with your fellow Democrats. “This is the time to build the strength of the Alabama Democratic Party,” said our keynote speaker, General Wesley Clark. He praised the state’s decision to move up its presidential preference primary to February 5, 2008 and said that putting a Democrat back in the White House is priority number one next year. Clark brought all in attendance to their feet when he proclaimed that former Governor Don Siegelman is being unjustly confined and that Congressman Artur Davis ought to be praised for bringing this issue up for scrutiny at the highest levels of government.

Special thanks to all those of you who bought tables and/or tickets to the Jefferson-Jackson Dinner because you are the reason the Democratic Party is able to operate day-to-day.

We appreciate everyone who participated in making this JJ a success:

Peace activist and Alex City native Ava Lowery gave a moving speech and presented her Memorial Day 2007 video to the audience. Her courage and talent are clear to everyone she meets and we encourage you to visit her website (www.peacetakescourage.com) and learn more about this gifted young woman.

ADP staff members Stephanie Crompton, Brannon Walden, and Renee Wesson, along with volunteers Brian Tunnell, Pam Wallace, and Elaine Lynch provided the logistical support for this event and they deserve a big round of applause for making it work so smoothly. The Alabama College Democrats also provided several volunteers to help in a variety of ways. Venders included: the Clinton and Obama campaigns, Brite Blue Dot, Books-A-Million, and the Alabama Federation of Democratic Women.

The event was covered by the Birmingham News and reporters from CBS 42 and FOX 6 in Birmingham. We were happy to have online journalists from Left in Alabama and Locust Fork Journal attend the dinner and post articles and video of Clark’s speech on their respective sites.

Even if you could not attend this Jefferson-Jackson Dinner, it’s not too late to help support your Democratic Party here in Alabama. Please consider making a small donation of $10 or $25 by clicking here or becoming a precinct organizer by clicking here. Small contributions of money and time are as vital for us as any other, and we need you to remain an active part of our team.

House District 12:

Tina Coggin, Field Organizer for North Alabama, is working tremendously hard to help us win the Special Election in HD12. She is looking for volunteers to help the Democratic Party win in Cullman County on January 29! The Democratic nominee for this special election is James Fields of Hanceville and he needs your help! Fields’ campaign won without a runoff in the primary race due to his consistent message and good standing in the community. He is not a man that is afraid to take strong positions on the issues and he firmly believes in the ideals of the Democratic Party. We need volunteers to help his campaign with things like: data entry, making phone calls, and canvassing door-to-door. Please contact Tina at tina@aladems.org or (334) 462-1230 for more info on how to get involved in this critical election.

Turnham Writes Op-Ed on Exxon Case:

ExxonMobil Verdict Cries for Examination by Voters

December 2, 2007
By: Chairman Joe Turnham
Opelika-Auburn News

“We were 100% sure they had defrauded the state. The evidence, letters from their own attorneys warned the company they were not paying the correct amounts to the state, that’s all we needed to convict.” I tell you, Exxon is laughing all the way to the bank.” This is the reaction quoted by Joseph King of Montgomery, the foreman of the last jury in the ExxonMobil Fraud Case after learning that the Alabama Supreme Court by an 8-1 verdict threw out all punitive damages against the world’s largest corporation.

A case of fraud was brought by the Alabama Department of Conservation against ExxonMobil over 7 years ago for openly defrauding Alabama citizens of royalties from ancient, non-renewable oil and gas. In April of 2001 a Montgomery County jury brought a $3.5 billion verdict against ExxonMobil. Based on a ‘technicality’ the Alabama Supreme Court in December of 2002 (after the November 2002 General Elections) through out the verdict and ordered a new trial.
