Turnham Asks Gov. Riley to “Let the People Vote”

MONTGOMERY – Today the Chairmen of the Alabama Democratic Party and the Jefferson County Democratic Party joined the chorus of those calling for Governor Bob Riley to honor the wishes of the Jefferson County Election Commission and allow a special election to fill the seat of County Commissioner Larry Langford, who won the recent contest to become the next mayor of Birmingham. Both Chairmen support the Jefferson County Election Commission’s decision to hold a special election to fill the seat.

“The law is clear on this matter and Governor Riley made a huge mistake when he appointed a commissioner in Mobile County instead of letting the people select their own. If he truly stands with the people of Jefferson County, Riley ought to let them decide who will represent them on the county commission in accordance with the law,” said Turnham. Jefferson County Chairman Robert Yarbrough added that “The Governor may be used to making decisions behind closed doors, but here in Jefferson County the overwhelming sentiment is to let the people of District 1 vote for their county commissioner.”
