ENEWS Update 2007-10-04

Presidential & Delegate Candidates:

Moving up Alabama's presidential primary date is paying dividends for Alabama Democrats. Over the past few months our state has been visited by Democratic candidates for President regularly with more to come. Senators Hillary Clinton, Chris Dodd, John Edwards, and Barack Obama have already made stops (some more than one) in Alabama. Edwards made his most recent appearance for a September 30 fundraiser in Birmingham, where 173 people turned out to support his campaign.

On Saturday, October 13 Senator Hillary Clinton will return to Alabama for an address to the luncheon meeting of the Alabama Democratic Conference. The luncheon will be held at the Winfrey Hotel in Hoover, following the State Democratic Executive Committee meeting being held there at 10:30 AM. The Democratic Party will have several tables at the ADC luncheon.

Qualifying for presidential and delegate candidates will open immediately following the SDEC meeting on October 13 and remain open until December 7 at 5:00 PM. To learn more about becoming a candidate for delegate, please visit our website at www.aladems.org or call 334-262-2221.

Second Congressional District:

Last week, Congressman Terry Everett of the Second Congressional District in Southeast Alabama announced he would not seek a ninth term in office. This prompted a flurry of phone calls to the Democratic HQ from state and national media asking about who the Democrats would have in this race next year. Rest assured that Party Chairman Joe Turnham and others are busy recruiting strong candidates for this very important election. "In the 2nd, when it's been open, it's been competitive for Democrats," Turnham recently told the Birmingham News. Looking at the number of elected officials from the 2nd District, over 70% of them are Democrats! Locally we are strong in this part of the state and this is an exciting opportunity for us to build on that success and send another Alabama Democrat to Congress.

Speaking of Congressional races, check out the (announced) Democrats challenging Republican incumbents in 2008:

AlaDems Host International Visitors:

On September 18, The Alabama Democratic Party was honored to host a group of about 30 visitors from foreign countries as a part of the Foreign Service Institute. They haled from places like Nigeria, Cambodia, Taiwan, Latvia, India, Germany, Turkey, Ecuador, Belgium and many other countries. This visit was set up to expose people who work at foreign embassies in the nation’s capitol to the political, economic, and cultural history of Alabama and the Deep South. They were greeted by Party Chairman Joe Turnham and ADP staff members. After individual tours of the offices, there was a session where the Chairman took questions about politics in the state and nation. We were also proud to have an Alabama native, Eufaula's own Dara Dozier, guiding this group through her job with the Public Diplomacy Training Division of the State Department. This was a great chance for us to show those around the world that Alabama Democrats are strong and committed to bringing real solutions to our people.

AlaDems Welcome David Washington:

David Washington has joined the staff of the Alabama Democratic Party this semester as an intern from Alabama State University. David is a proud member of our America’s armed services, having served three years active duty in the Navy and currently serving in the Navy Reserve. A Detroit-native, David is a senior majoring in Political Science as well as a member of the Iota Phi Theta Fraternity at ASU. He works to raise awareness at his school and is helping to organize a chapter of the College Democrats on campus. His past experience also includes working in campaigns for Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick. David is interested in one day seeking elected office himself. We are glad to have David as a part of our team and appreciate young people like him who want to get involved in the political process.

Jefferson-Jackson Dinner:

Please go ahead and make plans to join us in Birmingham on Friday, November 30 for the Alabama Democratic Party's next Jefferson-Jackson Dinner. We are still working out the details but there will be a fantastic speaker and lots of excitement at this event. We are currently selling ad space in the JJ program so please make sure your company or firm reserves space early. This is a great way to advertise before an audience of Democrats who may have a need for your company. The rates are full page $675, ½ page $400, ¼ page $250, business card $125 and those who are members of our Alabamans Club receive a 10% discount on ad prices. Email Stephanie today to reserve your space!!

Get Involved:

If you are looking to get involved with the Alabama Democratic Party, there are a couple of ways to do that. Of course donations are vital to us and we encourage our supporters to give whatever they can by clicking here. Volunteers are also needed to serve as precinct captains. These are the people who help organize poll watchers and other Democratic resources on and before election day. We need a precinct captain in EVERY precinct in the state before the general election next year. This is a great way to help your party protect our polling places and push the Democratic ticket up and down the ballot. If you can serve as a precinct captain in your area please email Tina Coggin at tina@aladems.org or Sim Pettway at sim@aladems.org.

House District 12 Special Election:

In other election news, Governor Riley has set the dates for the special election in Alabama House District 12 which was vacated by Rep. Neal Morrison (D-Cullman) at the end of August. The primary election will be held on Tuesday, November 13. If there is a need for a runoff, it will take place Tuesday, December 18 and the general election will be January 29. If there is no runoff the general will be held December 18.

Upcoming Events:

Please check the schedule below for important upcoming Democratic events or special elections in your area over the next couple of weeks. If you can, please attend these meetings and functions because they are the best way for us to network and fellowship at the local level. If you have events during this time that are not listed, send an email to jesse@aladems.org and I will post it on the Party's calendar. Thank you!
