ENEWS Update 2007-10-17
Children’s Health Care:
President Bush has vetoed the bipartisan SCHIP bill passed by Congress which would provide health insurance to 6.6 million poor children already enrolled, and expand it to cover an additional 4 million. SCHIP, known as ALL KIDS in Alabama, combines the best of public and private health coverage to get medical care to children in need. The expanded program would reduce the number of uninsured children in our state by as much as 65%.
The President, who ran as a so-called compassionate conservative, has denied health care to millions of kids with a stroke of his pen and the backing of Alabama's Congressional Republicans. Families, lawmakers, community leaders, and labor officials are holding a press conference tomorrow at noon in Gadsden to publicly call on our Republican representatives in Washington to do what is right by our children.
Give Mike Rogers (202-225-3261), Robert Aderholt (202-225-4876), and Jo Bonner (202-225-4931) a call and let them know they must join us to override President Bush’s heartless veto!!
One-Year-Out House Party:
Please join us on Saturday, November 3rd for a "one-year-out" house party. The Democratic Party is organizing these events all over the state and nation to prepare for next year and WE NEED YOUR HELP. The purpose of these local events is to recruit and train precinct volunteers ahead of the 2008 election. The only way Democrats can win next year is if we all get involved and do our part to take our country back. We have already set up a gathering in Birmingham (details below) with many more being organized. If you can host a party on this day, please let us know. Even if you cannot host an event, you can attend one in a community near you and we hope that you will take advantage of this opportunity to get involved and really help your local Party. Please watch the calendar section of www.aladems.org for a house party near you. Contact Tina Coggin or Sim Pettway at 800-995-3386 to organize a party in your area. You can also visit the DNC website to create your event online by clicking here.
2008 Presidential and Delegate Qualifying:
Qualifying for Presidential candidates and convention delegates opened on Saturday, October 13 and will remain open until December 7 at 5:00 PM. Forms and information are available by clicking HERE or you may come by the Democratic Party HQ in Montgomery.
Democrats Win Locally:
Congratulations to Democrats Merceria Ludgood and Larry Langford on their victories last week in local elections for Mobile County and the City of Birmingham, respectively. Ludgood won 80% of the vote in her bid to represent District One on Mobile's County Commission, and Langford was able to win his election without a runoff in Birmingham's mayoral race. We commend these two and know they will do a good job representing their communities.
Congrats to Al Gore:
The State Democratic Executive Committee on Saturday became the first state party in the nation to formally congratulate Vice President Al Gore for winning the Nobel Peace Prize last week. He earned the award for his work on global climate change and his Academy Award-winning documentary, An Inconvenient Truth. Below is a copy of the resolution that was unanimously passed by the SDEC in his honor:
WHEREAS, global warming is a very serious and important environmental issue that is close to the hearts and minds of Alabama Democrats; and
WHEREAS, the vast majority of scientists from around the world steadfastly agree that global warming is a threat to the future of the Earth; and
